Agnes Laoshi was very enthusiastic and always gave students opportunities to speak, gently correcting us in a soft and easy tone. She makes sure everyone understands the meaning and never teaches too fast. One memorable moment was learning the word “nǚ’ér” (daughter). She patiently corrected me because saying it wrong would change the meaning completely! We also tried singing the Rasa Sayang song using numbers, which was hilarious since we were out of tune, but thankfully we got it right in the end. I’m able to understand simple Mandarin conversations when speakers talk slowly, which is amazing for me as a CIC level student since I rarely get to speak Mandarin every day. I’m proud of my progress, now I can relate some words I learned while watching dramas, even if I sometimes struggle with tones. Agnes Laoshi, xie xie nin for everything from start to finish. You always give students the chance to try, stay patient, and keep the class motivated, even when the energy is low at first. Thanks to you, the class always ends up lively and fun!

The wow factors of my Mandarin class are the engaging and interactive teaching methods. Minqi Laoshi uses fun activities, like asking each student to answer questions in Mandarin and encouraging us to explain our understanding. The lessons are very structured and easy to follow, and she always shares interesting cultural facts, which makes the class exciting and motivating. One of my most memorable experiences was speaking entirely in Mandarin for the first time in class. I was nervous, but answering correctly made me feel proud and confident, showing me my progress. Taking the HSK exam for the first time was also unforgettable; after years without exams, I was nervous, but I passed with flying colours. I can now understand simple Mandarin and have basic conversations with my Chinese friends, and even get discounts at Chinese shops when they notice I can speak a little Mandarin. Mandarin has become one of my favourite languages besides English. As a child, I dreamed of speaking it fluently, and now that dream is almost coming true, which keeps me excited to continue learning. Minqi Laoshi has become my favourite teacher after Cloris Laoshi. She makes lessons fun, understandable, and always supports us patiently every week. Thank you, Minqi Laoshi!

Supportive lǎoshī . Fatimah lǎoshī is always there to answer my questions, and both she and Angel Yeeling are super supportive, correcting me whenever needed. I really enjoy Gōngkè time and the role-playing exercises, they help me remember things easily. I can now understand simple questions, and although I’m still at an early stage, learning Mandarin helps me start understanding my clients and other Mandarin speakers. It is challenging, but with the support of laoshimen and classmates, I’m proud that I can construct simple sentences now. I would like to thank Fatimah lǎoshī and Angel Yeeling for their guidance, and Kent lǎoshī as well. Friendly and supportive laoshi made learning enjoyable. I tried to shuo Hanyu yiqi chongwen ren, and it helped me gain confidence. Learning Mandarin has also helped me in getting a new job. I feel motivated to continue learning, and wo hen gaoxing xuexi Hanyu!

Initially, I didn’t know what to expect, and thought online classrooms might feel quiet, but thanks to friendly Ika lǎoshī, we quickly opened up. The teaching pace was just right, and we had so much fun in the bargaining role-play. Even when I forgot a line, I could improvise, and Ika lǎoshī was patient and supportive. I can understand simple conversations if spoken slowly, and I hope to keep improving, maybe by watching Chinese dramas or taking the HSK 1 exam. Learning Mandarin can be difficult, especially online, but Ika lǎoshī makes it fun and encourages us to enjoy the process despite pronunciation or grammar mistakes. I like that Ain lǎoshī always entertains my questions outside class hours, even on her day off, and responds with great explanations. For homework, I interviewed Chinese friends in Mandarin, and I also understand more while watching Chinese dramas. I feel proud of myself, doing something meaningful as I’m retired. I’m happy to learn new things with such a great laoshi, Ain Laoshi, and I always loved it when laoshi picked my name to read in class as it gave me the chance to practice my pronunciation. As a retiree, I enjoy learning Mandarin to spend my time meaningfully, and now I can even understand what the hero in Chinese dramas is saying 😁 Learning Mandarin can be quite challenging, but it’s also fun because I can use many things around me as learning tools. The wow factor of the Mandarin class is that it can be done online and based on our own timing, so we don’t have to go to the centre and can choose a schedule that works for us. One of my most interesting experiences was taking the HSK 1 for the first time. Even with the mock exam during class, experiencing the real exam in Mandarin was quite memorable. I’m now able to understand some words in sentences spoken by my friends and connect the dots even if I only understand a few words, which motivates me to keep learning harder. I’m proud and grateful for the opportunity to learn from experienced teachers and apply my skills outside class, like understanding Chinese dramas.
