Supportive lǎoshī . Fatimah lǎoshī is always there to answer my questions, and both she and Angel Yeeling are super supportive, correcting me whenever needed. I really enjoy Gōngkè time and the role-playing exercises, they help me remember things easily. I can now understand simple questions, and although I’m still at an early stage, learning Mandarin helps me start understanding my clients and other Mandarin speakers. It is challenging, but with the support of laoshimen and classmates, I’m proud that I can construct simple sentences now. I would like to thank Fatimah lǎoshī and Angel Yeeling for their guidance, and Kent lǎoshī as well. I love how fun she is when teaching, and how she explains things so well with great enthusiasm. One of my most memorable experiences was taking the HSK exam for the first time and feeling so nervous, but everyone was very welcoming and never made fun of mistakes. Minqi Laoshi uses fun activities, like asking each student to answer questions in Mandarin and encouraging us to explain our understanding. The lessons are very structured and easy to follow, and she always shares interesting cultural facts, which makes the class exciting and motivating. One of my most memorable experiences was speaking entirely in Mandarin for the first time in class. I was nervous, but answering correctly made me feel proud and confident, showing me my progress. Taking the HSK exam for the first time was also unforgettable; after years without exams, I was nervous, but I passed with flying colours. I can now understand simple Mandarin and have basic conversations with my Chinese friends, and even get discounts at Chinese shops when they notice I can speak a little Mandarin. Mandarin has become one of my favourite languages besides English. As a child, I dreamed of speaking it fluently, and now that dream is almost coming true, which keeps me excited to continue learning. Minqi Laoshi has become my favourite teacher after Cloris Laoshi. She makes lessons fun, understandable, and always supports us patiently every week. Thank you, Minqi Laoshi!

Memorising the Self Introduction assignment helped me remember the dialogue and speak confidently in front of others. Agnes Laoshi was very enthusiastic and always gave students opportunities to speak, gently correcting us in a soft and easy tone. She makes sure everyone understands the meaning and never teaches too fast. One memorable moment was learning the word “nǚ’ér” (daughter). She patiently corrected me because saying it wrong would change the meaning completely! We also tried singing the Rasa Sayang song using numbers, which was hilarious since we were out of tune, but thankfully we got it right in the end. I’m able to understand simple Mandarin conversations when speakers talk slowly, which is amazing for me as a CIC level student since I rarely get to speak Mandarin every day. I’m proud of my progress, now I can relate some words I learned while watching dramas, even if I sometimes struggle with tones. Agnes Laoshi, xie xie nin for everything from start to finish.
