One wow factor of my Mandarin class is how interactive and fun the lessons are, with games, role plays, and real-life scenarios. I also love how we explore Chinese culture, which makes learning more exciting and meaningful. My most interesting memory was gaining new friends through Mandarin and feeling really proud when I wrote my own script, spoke confidently, and created a video using what I learned. Learning Mandarin has helped me understand the language better in daily situations, like watching shows and talking with friends, and it’s also helpful when communicating with my neighbour who always encourages me. Overall, learning Mandarin gives me a great feeling as I become more confident each day and look forward to speaking more fluently. I have a very patient Minqi lǎoshī who is always willing to answer any questions during class, which is very encouraging and helpful. A memorable moment was making a self-recording video while reading a Mandarin script I had written, making sure my intonation was accurate. Learning Mandarin has allowed me to have short conversations with Chinese shopkeepers near my home, and I’m pleased to practice what I learned at Kunkwan. The journey is challenging but rewarding, and I am motivated to continue improving my oral and written Mandarin. Learning in Kunkwan is very fun and relaxing, as the laoshi always keeps students engaged and patiently answers our questions to make sure we understand. I’m happy to learn new things with such a great laoshi, Ain Laoshi, and I always loved it when laoshi picked my name to read in class as it gave me the chance to practice my pronunciation. As a retiree, I enjoy learning Mandarin to spend my time meaningfully, and now I can even understand what the hero in Chinese dramas is saying 😁 Learning Mandarin can be quite challenging, but it’s also fun because I can use many things around me as learning tools. Agnes Laoshi was very enthusiastic and always gave students opportunities to speak, gently correcting us in a soft and easy tone. She makes sure everyone understands the meaning and never teaches too fast. One memorable moment was learning the word “nǚ’ér” (daughter). She patiently corrected me because saying it wrong would change the meaning completely! We also tried singing the Rasa Sayang song using numbers, which was hilarious since we were out of tune, but thankfully we got it right in the end. I’m able to understand simple Mandarin conversations when speakers talk slowly, which is amazing for me as a CIC level student since I rarely get to speak Mandarin every day. I’m proud of my progress, now I can relate some words I learned while watching dramas, even if I sometimes struggle with tones. Agnes Laoshi, xie xie nin for everything from start to finish. You always give students the chance to try, stay patient, and keep the class motivated, even when the energy is low at first. Thanks to you, the class always ends up lively and fun!
